What is Plagiarism? Plagiarism ("plagiary") is derived from the Latin word "Plagiarius" meaning kidnapper and was first described in literature by playwright Ben Johnson in 1601 to describe someone guilty of literary theft.26 The first article on this subject was written by Halsted G.B appeared in "Science" in 1896 under the title "supplement or plagiarism" and since then hundreds of articles have been written on this subject. This is an act of intellectual dishonesty. In colleges and universities, it violates honor codes and can cause irreparable damage to a person's reputation. It also has serious consequences; a plagiarized assignment can lead to a failing grade, suspension, or expulsion. Types of plagiarism the academic writer should know # 1. “Clone” Cloning plagiarism is also called identical copying.
